Material Lineage Organic Cotton Sweatshirt — Black

A restrained study of material continuity and the cultural knowledge carried through natural resources.

Material Lineage explores how knowledge is sustained through repeated contact with fibre, wood, clay, plant matter and other locally available materials. Reduced to a system of parallel lines, the composition moves from structural continuity towards fading, interruption and repair—reflecting knowledge placed under pressure as materials and working conditions become less secure.

Made from 100% organic combed ring-spun cotton at a substantial 350 g/m², this heavyweight sweatshirt provides warmth, durability and a refined, structured silhouette.

The Ash Grey artwork extends vertically across the back, accompanied by a reduced three-line signal at the chest against the Black base.

Material Lineage — Study 02

Cultures at Risk Collection

About the garment

A considered heavyweight layer built from certified organic cotton for everyday wear across seasons.

Constructed using 100% organic combed ring-spun cotton, the fabric carries a substantial 350 g/m² weight—providing warmth, durability and a structured drape while maintaining breathability. The brushed interior offers a soft hand feel, while the outer surface remains clean, dense and refined.

Designed with restraint, the garment prioritises longevity, comfort and everyday versatility.

Design & concept

Material Lineage explores how cultural knowledge can be carried through natural material.

Across many place-based practices, knowledge is not transmitted through instruction alone. It is learned through repeated contact with locally available materials—their weight, tension, grain, flexibility, resistance, preparation and response to use.

Fibre, wood, clay, reeds, bark, plant matter, stone and other natural resources can become part of a living system of observation and skill. Understanding develops through handling, making, correction and repetition, often across generations.

When essential materials become scarce, altered or inaccessible, the knowledge connected to them can also become harder to practise and pass forward. A material may remain physically present while the conditions required to gather, prepare or work with it gradually weaken.

The artwork translates this pressure into eleven fine parallel lines.

The upper structure begins with continuity and measured alignment. As the composition progresses downward, the system becomes increasingly uncertain:

  • parallel lines represent material continuity and accumulated knowledge
  • fading lines suggest resources or practices becoming less available
  • an early ending records a lineage that cannot continue through its expected course
  • a narrow interruption marks a break in transmission
  • a precise joining mark represents an attempt to reconnect what has been separated
  • surviving lines preserve structure without suggesting complete restoration

The composition does not depict total collapse.

Instead, it records partial survival—a system continuing through reduction, interruption and repair.

The complete Material Lineage composition extends vertically across the back. A reduced group of three lines appears at the chest, with the interrupted central line and precise joining mark condensing the wider system into a quiet front signal.

Rendered in Ash Grey against the Black base, both applications remain deliberately low contrast—visible through close observation rather than immediate impact.

System Insight

MATERIAL LINEAGE
Material Continuity — Knowledge Transmission System

A minimal system exploring how cultural knowledge is carried through continued access to natural material.

Material knowledge develops through long familiarity.

Texture guides handling.
Resistance informs technique.
Repetition builds memory.
Material availability enables continuity.

When the material conditions supporting a practice begin to change, knowledge may not disappear immediately. It can become fragmented, less frequently practised or increasingly difficult to transfer through lived experience.

This artwork translates that pressure into a disciplined linear structure.

Continuity carries knowledge.
Fading records reduction.
Interruption marks separation.
The join represents attempted repair.

The composition is not a representation of any particular craft tradition or community. It is a research-led interpretation of how material scarcity and environmental change can affect the conditions through which cultural intelligence remains active.

An observation of knowledge held through material—reduced, interrupted, yet partially sustained.

Design & fit

Cut in a regular unisex fit, the silhouette remains structured yet non-restrictive.

  • Regular unisex fit
  • Set-in sleeves
  • Crew neck
  • 1×1 rib collar, cuffs and hem
  • Double-needle topstitch at collar, sleeves and hem

A reduced three-line Material Lineage signal appears at the chest, while the complete composition extends vertically across the back.

Both applications are rendered in Ash Grey, maintaining a precise and restrained presence against the Black base.

Collection note

Part of Cultures at Risk — When Nature Fades, a research-led visual archive examining how environmental change can weaken the conditions through which cultural knowledge is practised, remembered and passed between generations.

Material Lineage is presented as an informed, non-literal interpretation rather than documentation of a particular culture, material tradition or community.
