Memory Relay Organic Cotton Hoodie — Black

A restrained study of intergenerational memory and the cultural knowledge carried through repeated transmission.

Memory Relay explores how knowledge moves between generations through observation, participation, repetition and adaptation. Reduced to a sequence of grouped signals, the composition shifts through retention, weakening and return—reflecting continuity that survives without remaining unchanged.

Made from 100% organic combed ring-spun cotton at a substantial 350 g/m², this structured heavyweight hoodie offers warmth, durability and a refined silhouette for everyday wear.

The Stone White artwork extends across the upper back, accompanied by a reduced two-group signal at the chest against the Black base.

Cultures at Risk Collection

About the garment

A considered heavyweight essential designed with clarity, structure and restraint.

Constructed from 100% organic combed ring-spun cotton, the substantial 350 g/m² fabric provides warmth, durability and a structured feel while maintaining breathability. The dense outer surface creates a clean, refined appearance, while the brushed interior adds softness and everyday comfort.

Designed for longevity, the garment balances function, comfort and a quiet visual presence.

Design & concept

Memory Relay explores how cultural knowledge is carried between generations.

Across many place-based cultures, knowledge is not transmitted through written instruction alone. It is learned through watching, listening, participating, repeating and gradually taking responsibility within everyday practice.

An older generation may demonstrate an action. A younger person observes, attempts, adjusts and remembers. With continued participation, knowledge moves forward—not as an exact copy, but as something interpreted through new conditions and lived experience.

Environmental disruption, displacement, changing livelihoods and reduced access to familiar landscapes can weaken this process. Knowledge may remain remembered, yet become less frequently practised. Parts of a system may continue clearly while surrounding context becomes fragmented or altered.

The artwork translates this process into four grouped arrangements of vertical signals.

Each group represents a stage within an ongoing relay:

  • repeated structures suggest knowledge carried forward
  • the central paired marks represent an essential element retained through every stage
  • changes in surrounding marks record interpretation and adaptation
  • reduced or weakened signals suggest incomplete transmission
  • the final group returns with greater clarity without exactly reproducing the first

The composition does not describe memory as a fixed archive.

Instead, it presents knowledge as an active sequence—received, practised, altered and passed forward again.

The complete Memory Relay composition extends across the upper back beneath the hood. A reduced two-group signal appears at the chest, preserving the relationship between repetition, variation and continuity within a smaller front detail.

Rendered in Stone White against the Black base, both applications maintain a controlled contrast that keeps the fine signals visible without becoming visually dominant.

System Insight

MEMORY RELAY
Intergenerational Continuity — Knowledge Transmission System

A minimal system exploring how cultural knowledge moves through observation, participation and memory.

Knowledge becomes active through use.

Observation begins transmission.
Participation develops understanding.
Repetition strengthens memory.
Variation records adaptation.

When the conditions supporting this exchange become less secure, knowledge may not disappear immediately. Its structure can become incomplete, fragmented or increasingly dependent on memory rather than continued practice.

The artwork translates this pressure into a sequence of related signal groups.

Repetition carries continuity.
Variation records interpretation.
Weakening marks interrupted transmission.
The surviving pair preserves the essential relay.

The composition is not a representation of any particular ritual, language, community or cultural tradition. It is a research-led interpretation of how knowledge may continue across generations while changing through experience and environmental pressure.

An observation of memory in motion—received, altered and carried forward.

Collection note

Part of Cultures at Risk — When Nature Fades, a research-led visual archive examining how environmental change can weaken the conditions through which cultural knowledge is practised, remembered and passed between generations.

Memory Relay is presented as an informed, non-literal interpretation rather than documentation of a particular culture, tradition or community.
