Displaced Ground Organic Cotton Twill Cap — Charcoal
A restrained study of altered belonging, shifting boundaries and the traces maintained when people are separated from familiar ground.
Displaced Ground explores how land can remain present in memory while access, occupation and the conditions of belonging change. Reduced for embroidery to a single asymmetrical intersection, the composition preserves a relationship in which connection remains visible despite unequal positions on either side.
Crafted from 100% organic cotton at a substantial 271 g/m², the cap offers durable structure, breathable comfort and a relaxed unstructured silhouette.
The Displaced Ground fragment appears in Old Gold embroidery on the wearer’s left front panel, creating a quiet, controlled contrast against the Charcoal base.

About the product
A considered everyday cap designed with clarity, durability and restraint.
Crafted from 100% organic cotton twill, the substantial 271 g/m² fabric provides dependable structure while maintaining breathable comfort. The unstructured crown creates a relaxed silhouette without compromising its clean, minimal appearance.
Designed with intention, the piece prioritises comfort, durability and long-term use.
Design & concept
Displaced Ground examines what happens when a familiar relationship with land remains remembered, but the conditions that once supported belonging, access and continuity have changed.
The work does not illustrate borders, maps, landscapes, buildings, migration routes or recognisable territorial imagery.
Instead, it considers displacement through relationships between established ground, the boundaries that give it structure and the changing positions of those connected to it.
Ground provides orientation.
Repeated presence creates familiarity.
A boundary gives structure to belonging.
Pressure alters access.
Position begins to change.
Connection continues through memory, even when physical continuity has been interrupted.
The complete Displaced Ground artwork is organised as a large open linear field.
Long upper and lower lines establish the primary ground. A connected vertical line supports the left side, while a separate vertical mark toward the right suggests that the opposite boundary has shifted away from its earlier position.
Smaller horizontal marks occupy different locations within and beyond the larger structure.
Some remain held within the field.
Others approach its edge.
Several continue beyond the expected boundary.
The larger field remains visible throughout the movement, preserving the memory of an earlier relationship even as the smaller elements no longer occupy their original alignment.
The complete progression moves through:
- ground establishing orientation
- repeated presence creating familiarity
- boundary giving structure to belonging
- pressure weakening continuity
- positions beginning to shift
- movement extending beyond the established field
- memory preserving connection with what remains
For the compact surface of the cap, this wider system has been reduced to a single embroidered intersection.
A central vertical line establishes a dividing position.
A short horizontal mark approaches from the left, while a longer horizontal line continues toward the right.
The three elements remain connected through one shared point, but the relationship on either side is no longer equal.
The shorter mark suggests a position that has been restricted, interrupted or left behind.
The longer line suggests continuation under altered conditions.
The vertical element holds the threshold between them—a point where remembered ground and changed position remain connected without returning to balance.
Rather than reproducing the complete artwork, the embroidered fragment preserves the central condition of Displaced Ground: connection remains visible, but belonging is experienced from unequal positions.
The fragment is not intended as an independent symbol or logo.
It is an embroidery-scale extraction from the wider Displaced Ground system, carrying its essential relationship between boundary, separation and continued connection.
Positioned on the wearer’s left front panel, the composition avoids interference from the centre seam and remains clear across the curved crown.
Rendered in Old Gold thread against Charcoal organic cotton twill, the embroidery creates a restrained, earth-toned contrast without becoming visually dominant.

DISPLACED GROUND
Belonging Under Pressure — Boundary & Relocation System
A minimal system examining how relationships with familiar ground change when access, continuity and established positions come under pressure.
Ground establishes orientation.
Presence creates familiarity.
Boundary gives structure.
Pressure weakens continuity.
Displacement changes position.
Memory preserves connection.
In the complete study, the long horizontal lines represent remembered ground.
They establish a continuing spatial reference that remains present even after the human relationship with it has changed.
The connected vertical line suggests an established boundary held through familiarity and repeated occupation.
The separate vertical mark introduces instability.
It does not complete the field or restore a fixed enclosure. Instead, it indicates that the position of the boundary has become uncertain, altered or detached from its earlier structure.
The smaller horizontal marks register human presence.
Their uneven positions suggest relationships that no longer occupy a shared alignment.
Some remain within the remembered field.
Others approach its edge.
Several move beyond it.
The movement beyond the boundary does not imply that the earlier relationship has disappeared.
The larger structure remains visible as a field of memory, orientation and attachment.
Displacement is therefore recorded not as complete separation, but as a changed relationship between ground and position.
The cap carries the most condensed fragment of this wider visual system.
The vertical line establishes a threshold.
The short left-hand mark suggests interrupted continuity.
The extended right-hand line records movement into a changed position.
Their shared intersection preserves connection.
Their unequal lengths prevent the relationship from returning to balance.
The reduced fragment suggests a larger spatial system beyond what is visible.
It does not close the boundary or resolve the displacement. Instead, it holds one precise moment in which separation and connection exist together.
The composition is not a representation of a particular territory, migration, conflict, community or historical event. It is a research-led interpretation of how belonging can remain connected to remembered ground after access, occupation or established relationships have changed.
An observation of ground that remains remembered after the conditions of belonging have changed.
Design & fit
The cap features a classic unstructured six-panel construction designed for everyday comfort.
Matching sewn eyelets provide ventilation, while the adjustable self-fabric strap allows a flexible fit.
- Unstructured crown
- Six-panel construction
- Curved visor
- Matching sewn eyelets
- Self-fabric adjustable closure
- Brass slider with hidden tuck-in
The reduced Displaced Ground intersection is embroidered on the wearer’s left front panel, maintaining visual clarity while avoiding the centre seam.
A central vertical line, short left-hand mark and longer right-hand line preserve the relationship between boundary, interrupted continuity and movement into a changed position.
Old Gold embroidery creates a quiet, earth-toned contrast against the Charcoal base while keeping the structural relationship legible at embroidery scale.

Producing only what is ordered helps reduce excess inventory and unnecessary overproduction.
Collection note
Part of Human + Land — The Soil Remembers, a research-led visual archive examining the reciprocal relationship between people and the ground they depend upon.
The collection considers repeated return, seasonal care, adaptation, instability, migration and the residual memory carried by land after established patterns of human presence have changed.
Rather than illustrating agriculture, territory or rural life, the works translate these relationships into restrained systems of continuity, boundary, interval, interruption and return.
Displaced Ground examines how familiar land can remain present in memory while access, occupation and the conditions of belonging change—and how connection may continue from an altered position.
The work is presented as an informed, non-literal interpretation rather than documentation of a particular place, community, displacement or historical event.
