Held Insert Organic Cotton Sweatshirt — White
A restrained study of individually placed decisions and the way a larger structure is built through repeated acts of insertion.
Held Insert is informed by the discontinuous supplementary-weft process within Jamdani handloom weaving, focusing not on motifs or visible textile patterns but on placement, sequencing and the judgement involved in building a wider structure through local actions. Reduced to a series of folded linear units, the composition records repetition, absence and a subtly shifted return.
Made from 100% organic combed ring-spun cotton at a substantial 350 g/m², this heavyweight sweatshirt provides warmth, durability and a refined, structured silhouette.
A reduced two-part signal appears at the chest, while the complete Held Insert study extends across the upper back in restrained warm-earth linework against the White base.

About the garment
A considered heavyweight layer built from certified organic cotton for everyday wear across seasons.
Constructed using 100% organic combed ring-spun cotton, the fabric carries a substantial 350 g/m² weight—providing warmth, durability and a structured drape while maintaining breathability. The brushed interior offers a soft hand feel, while the outer surface remains clean, dense and refined.
Designed with restraint, the garment prioritises longevity, comfort and everyday versatility.
Design & concept
Held Insert explores how a larger structure can be built through many individually placed decisions.
The work is informed by Jamdani handloom weaving and, more specifically, the discontinuous supplementary-weft process through which additional threads are introduced only where they are required.
The artwork does not reproduce Jamdani motifs, woven patterns or the visual appearance of finished cloth.
Instead, it translates the internal logic of placement.
An insertion is introduced.
It occupies a local interval.
The wider structure continues.
Another insertion appears elsewhere.
Each action is limited in scale, yet together these decisions contribute to the formation of a larger whole.
This way of working depends on attention, sequencing and repeated judgement. Each local placement must relate to what has already been established while remaining responsive to the structure developing around it.
Held Insert translates this process into a horizontal field containing a sequence of folded linear units.
Most remain independent from the surrounding boundary, reinforcing their character as individually placed elements rather than parts of a continuous decorative border.
Their lengths and positions vary while following one shared structural rule.
One expected insertion is absent, creating a deliberate pause within the sequence.
A later insertion returns in a slightly shifted position.
These changes do not suggest failure.
They record the responsive nature of a hand-built system in which continuity develops through individual decisions rather than exact mechanical repetition.
At the chest, the artwork is reduced to two compact folded units. One sits slightly lower than the other, preserving the relationship between repetition, placement and variation at a smaller scale.
Across the upper back, the complete Held Insert composition unfolds within a long horizontal field, allowing spacing, absence and return to remain legible within the wider system.
Rendered in restrained warm-earth linework against the White base, the artwork maintains a quiet presence and reveals its structure gradually through closer observation.

HELD INSERT
Local Placement — Discontinuous Insertion System
A minimal system exploring how a larger structure is assembled through individually placed decisions.
Placement begins locally.
Repetition establishes continuity.
Variation records judgement.
Absence interrupts expectation.
Return continues the structure.
The separate folded units represent local insertions made within a wider working field.
Their repetition establishes a shared logic without making every element identical.
The missing unit creates a pause where another insertion might be expected.
The later shifted return shows continuity without exact duplication.
Together, these elements suggest that a larger whole can emerge through a sequence of discrete actions rather than through one uninterrupted movement.
The structure accumulates.
It is built decision by decision.
Held Insert does not document a Jamdani motif, textile pattern or loom diagram. It is a research-led interpretation of the discontinuous placement logic found within a living handloom practice.
An observation of structure built one decision at a time.
Design & fit
Cut in a regular unisex fit, the silhouette remains structured yet non-restrictive.
- Regular unisex fit
- Set-in sleeves
- Crew neck
- 1×1 rib collar, cuffs and hem
- Double-needle topstitch at collar, sleeves and hem
A reduced two-part Held Insert signal appears at the chest, while the complete horizontal composition extends across the upper back.
Both applications are rendered in restrained warm-earth linework, creating a subtle, low-contrast presence against the White base.

Collection note
Part of Endangered Art Forms — Hands That Remember, a research-led visual archive examining the internal intelligence of living artistic practices: how material is prepared, tools and bodies are coordinated, sequences are learned, variation is judged, errors are corrected and knowledge is carried through continued practice.
Held Insert is informed by the discontinuous supplementary-weft process associated with Jamdani handloom weaving. It does not reproduce Jamdani motifs, textile patterns or culturally specific decorative forms.
The work is presented as an informed, non-literal interpretation rather than documentation of the practice itself.
