Memory Relay Organic Cotton Twill Cap — Charcoal
A restrained study of intergenerational memory and the cultural knowledge carried through repeated transmission.
Memory Relay explores how knowledge moves between generations through observation, participation, repetition and adaptation. Reduced for embroidery to two related signal groups, the composition reflects knowledge received, retained and carried onward.
Crafted from 100% organic cotton at a substantial 271 g/m², the cap offers durable structure, breathable comfort and a relaxed unstructured silhouette.
The Memory Relay fragment appears in Stone White embroidery on the wearer’s left front panel, creating a quiet, controlled contrast against the Charcoal base.

Design & concept
Memory Relay explores how cultural knowledge is carried between generations.
Across many place-based cultures, knowledge is not transmitted through written instruction alone. It is learned through watching, listening, participating, repeating and gradually taking responsibility within everyday practice.
An older generation may demonstrate an action. A younger person observes, attempts, adjusts and remembers. Through continued participation, knowledge moves forward—not as an exact copy, but as something interpreted through new conditions and lived experience.
Environmental disruption, displacement, changing livelihoods and reduced access to familiar landscapes can weaken this process. Knowledge may remain remembered while becoming less frequently practised. Parts of a system may continue clearly, while surrounding context becomes fragmented or altered.
The complete Memory Relay artwork is organised through four related groups of vertical signals, each representing a stage within an ongoing sequence of transmission.
For the compact surface of the cap, this wider system has been reduced to two embroidered groups:
- the upper mark suggests knowledge being received
- the central paired lines represent shared practice and active exchange
- the lower mark suggests knowledge carried onward
- repetition between the groups reflects continuity across stages
- the space between them records passage rather than separation
Rather than reproducing the complete artwork, the embroidered fragment preserves its essential principle: knowledge moving forward through participation, memory and repetition.
Positioned on the wearer’s left front panel, the composition avoids interference from the centre seam and remains clear across the curved crown.
Rendered in Stone White against the Charcoal twill base, the embroidery creates a precise, controlled contrast without becoming visually dominant.
System Insight
MEMORY RELAY
Intergenerational Continuity — Knowledge Transmission System
A minimal system exploring how cultural knowledge moves through observation, participation and memory.
Knowledge becomes active through use.
Observation begins transmission.
Participation develops understanding.
Repetition strengthens memory.
Variation records adaptation.
When the conditions supporting this exchange become less secure, knowledge may not disappear immediately. Its structure can become incomplete, fragmented or increasingly dependent on memory rather than continued practice.
The cap carries a condensed fragment of this wider visual system.
Repetition carries continuity.
The paired centre preserves shared practice.
Spacing records passage between stages.
The fragment suggests a larger relay beyond what is visible.
The composition is not a representation of any particular ritual, language, community or cultural tradition. It is a research-led interpretation of how knowledge may continue across generations while changing through experience and environmental pressure.
An observation of memory in motion—received, retained and carried forward.

Collection note
Part of Cultures at Risk — When Nature Fades, a research-led visual archive examining how environmental change can weaken the conditions through which cultural knowledge is practised, remembered and passed between generations.
Memory Relay is presented as an informed, non-literal interpretation rather than documentation of a particular culture, tradition or community.
