Some losses begin long before an absence becomes visible. The Final Shell follows the hawksbill sea turtle through the tropical waters and reef habitats it calls home.
Hawksbills feed mainly on sponges in many areas. Their survival is threatened by illegal hunting and trade, accidental capture in fishing gear, and the loss of feeding and nesting habitats.
Through this Rare Species study, Rabanizz reflects on the connections between an animal, its habitat, and the wider life around it—and carries those connections into clothing and art.
A Life Connected to the Reef
A coral reef offers the hawksbill places to feed and shelter. Its narrow, pointed beak reaches into cracks and crevices, finding sponges and other food among the reef’s living structures.
When reef habitats deteriorate, the turtle’s feeding grounds change too. Coral bleaching, pollution, and coastal development can damage the places and food sources on which hawksbills depend.
The Final Shell asks us to look beyond the outline of one animal—to notice the habitat, relationships, and living world held around it.
The Pressure on the Reef
The pressures facing hawksbills extend from the reef to the shore. Illegal hunting for their shells and accidental capture in fishing gear threaten turtles directly. Pollution and coastal development can damage feeding grounds and nesting beaches.
Climate change adds further pressure. Warming seas can damage coral habitats, while rising sea levels and storms can erode or flood nesting areas.
Protecting the hawksbill means addressing these threats across the places it feeds, travels, and nests. Its future is connected to the condition of those places.
